I am Jasmine Malone and I am a senior English major at Prairie View A&M University. I have hopes of teaching high school English and then returning to my alma mater and teaching African American Literature or some other interesting subject. For my lesson on Persuasion I decided to gear it towards high school seniors in Texas and have a research paper as part of their assessment. The research paper focuses on the historical context of the novel and how it impacted the characters as well as the plot. I want students to understand when they are reading a piece of literature there is often a reason why the author acted in the manner they did. I want students to get out of reading something just because it is assigned and use critical thinking skills. Also many students are not prepared for the rigor of the college curriculum when it comes to writing research papers and this assignment should help get them prepared. The lesson I created is for the course of a week. After reading the novel (which may take the whole six weeks) students will have one week to write their papers. A lot of activities will be done as homework and/or class work. This allows for the instructor to check for comprehension at various times. On the last day a class discussion will take place and to make things interesting for the children they could dress as Jane Austen like the young lady in the photo. On this page you will find a lesson I created already formatted in Word (for easy reproduction) as well as a PowerPoint presentation.
